We have all experienced that feeling of nervousness during a nursing job interview. We often wonder what questions will be asked and how to answer them as best as we can. We want to make a good impression. We want the employers to make them feel that we know a bit about their facility and administration.

But what if the tables are turned and your task is to ask questions for the interview? What if you were the interviewer and you need to come up with the right questions? What type of questions is unethical and illegal? Asking the wrong questions may happen because of ignorance, lack of experience or lack of ethical sensitivity. If you happen to be an employer whose job is to ask interview questions, here is a list of questions that you really do not need to ask applicants.

Religion

As in any other job interview, you are not allowed to ask about religion, as this is not, in any way, connected to the job responsibilities of being a nurse. Do not ask questions that would make the nurse applicant feel as if your facility has some sort of religious preference.

Age

Aside from being rude, asking a person's age also leads to claims of age discrimination. Do not ask them what year they graduated or something similar to it. What is more important is their years of experience in their nursing career.

Family Status

You may think it's all right, but you are not encouraged to ask questions about an applicant's family status. Do no ask if he or she is married and if he or she has children. If you really want to know if they do have children, ask them other questions that would lead them to talk about their family status. You could talk about holidays and schedule-related topics. Their responses might include family obligations or their children's schooling.

Health and Lifestyle

The responses to your questions can already help you make assumptions about the applicant's health status. You cannot ask applicant's if they smoke, drink or take any medication. However, you can ask them if they take illegal drugs. If you really want to know if they have any disabilities, you can ask questions like "Will you be able to perform the functions required by the job?"

As a nurse applicant interviewer, it is essential that you ask the right questions. These questions will define what kind of facility you have and who you are as an interview.
