Steps for NCLEX Preparation

Steps for NCLEX Preparation

The NCLEX is one of the biggest hurdles that any aspiring nurse would have to go through and that is why NCLEX preparation is vital prior to taking the test. Now I'm not talking about the actual review programs, resource books, and classes that nursing graduates have to go through to prepare academically for this important licensing test. There are nursing schools and teachers for that.

Rather, what this article suggests are simple relaxation methods that can help calm the nerves and keep the stress level controllable for the student facing the NCLEX. Try out these steps:

1. Take deep breaths.
While this may sound like a no-brainer, it may surprise you how very few actually practice this oldest trick in the book. When you feel a wave of anxiety coming up indicated by a tightening of the throat or a sickening feeling in your stomach, fill your lungs with as much air as possible and see how this helps relax the nerves.

2. Practice visualization methods.
In the days prior to the exam, it will help to do some visualization exercises. Before you open your review notes, sit straight, close your eyes, and imagine yourself as already passing the exam. Try to capture the feeling you would have when this happens. Do this exercise also before you sleep at night. By regularly visualizing positive images, your subconscious will embrace these and you will have a more confident aura going to the exam.

3. Find the best method of learning.
Some individuals study best by doing constant repetition of pertinent facts, while others find it more efficient to move parts of the body like the arms or legs while studying. When you find the best way of studying for you, you should be able to retain more information in less time.

4. Focus only on one question at a time.
As soon as you're taking the test, concentrate on the question you are answering. Don't worry about the questions that you have yet to encounter or those that you've already done.

5. Keep a positive attitude.
If you prepare for the NCLEX believing that you have what it takes to be a good nurse, then the battle is already half done.

By doing these simple steps, you give yourself a boost of confidence even as you embark on what could be a life-altering challenge for you as you start your nursing career.
